  • Adolescent Health

Adolescent Health is a unique division of pediatrics.  The period of adolescence describes the critical link between childhood and adulthood, characterized by significant physical, psychological, and social transitions. These transitions carry new risks but also present opportunities to positively influence the immediate and future health of young people. In addition, problems may arise such as substance abuse, eating disorders and sexually transmitted diseases. At this age, teens may also have psychosocial problems including depression, anxiety and sexual identity issues.

Providers at Pediatric Associates of Greater Salem and Beverly prescribe hormonal contraception for many reasons inclusive of menstrual problems and acne.  It is now standard of care required by most insurance carriers that when a patient is prescribed hormonal contraception, providers of Pediatric Associates of Greater Salem and Beverly will routinely screen for sexually transmitted infections at least annually per the guidelines of most all major insurance companies.

  • Eating Disorders

Eating disorders constitute a range of illnesses characterized by abnormal eating behaviors associated with a range of emotional difficulties. Eating disorders rank as the third most common chronic illness in adolescent females Although they occur more often in females, males are also affected. The prevalence has increased dramatically over the past 3 decades. Eating disorders exact a tremendous toll on those adolescents who have them and their families.  Medical complications include possible irreversible growth slowing, pubertal delay and risk for osteoporosis as an adult. Regardless of specific diagnosis, age of onset, or duration of illness, all eating disorders are associated with changes in affect, self-esteem, energy, judgment, concentration, and social function.

  • Rheumatology

If your child has complaints of pain in the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, bones, or tendons), other symptoms of arthritis, or an autoimmune disorder, we have a specialist on staff. Children are not just small adults. Their bodies are growing and have unique medical needs. They usually express their concerns differently than adults. They cannot always answer medical questions and are not always able to be patient and cooperative. Pediatric rheumatologists know how to examine a child and understand how to gain the child’s confidence and cooperation to the best of the child’s developmental abilities.
